
- [Student Life] 2011-12-29, SIPPE graduate students joint Shanghai Soho International Youth Hostel to donate the unworn clothes, scarves, and gloves for keeping warm, and second-hand books to the western pupils of Lisu minority, Lijiang District, Yunnan, this time. The Shanghai Soho International Youth Hostel will be responsible for the clothes sterilized and delivery of all the donations to the school by post. All members of our laboratory responded and donated positively, with hope that the western impoverished children may feel warm in this winter. (zh)

- [Academic Exchanges] 2011-11-28, The 2011 annual meeting of the national key laboratory of plant molecular genetics (NKLPMG) and the 23rd academic commission was successfully held in the lecture hall of SIPPE. Dr. Hongwei Xue, director, made the work report at the meeting on behalf of the laboratory. He generally introduced the orientation and objectives, research directions of laboratory and field layout, talent team, and the overall progress of 2011, and summarized the research progresses that made in plant function genomics, plant hormone and signal transduction, plant development and cell biology, plant nutrition and metabolism, plant biotechnology and other areas. Meanwhile, Dr. Hongwei Xue expressed that the laboratory will seek for the gaps and shortcomings from the assessment, strive to improve the sustainability of the research outputs, and continue to strengthen the capacity in the critical areas of scientific research and great projects, achievements transformation, personnel training and other aspects of the work.
The success of the academic commission is of great significance to the future work of the lab, which will bring together expert advices, maintain a good momentum of development, refine research direction, optimize talent team, make clear the development goal, boost work of laboratory in all aspects into a new period of development. - [Lab Tendency] 2011-11-01, the Chinese spaceship Shenzhou-8 was launched on board a Long March rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Inner Mongolia.
Althrough the lauching course, as the chief designer of Space Life Science and Biotechnology subsystem, Prof. Hong-Wei Xue went to the launch centre for the last preparation work at the forefront with the other scientists.
As reported by deputy chief commander of the manned space project, Shenzhou-8 carried a bio sample from the collaboration of China and the Europe. As many as 17 experiments on life science, projected together by China and Germany, are scheduled to be operated on the Shenzhou-8. In addition, it is the first time for China's manned spaceship to be responsible for international cooperation in the field of space science. Shanghai Insititute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (SIPPE) has played an important role in the project designing, demonstration and engineering in the past 4 years. - [Lab Tendency] 2011-10-28, PhD candidates in our lab, Yajin Ye and Lijuan Zhou, carried out their opening reports on "Dynamic DNA methylation regulates rice seed development" and "Rice plant type and development of leaf angle", respectively. Firstly, they summarized the current progress in the related area and provided their thoughts on how to push the related research forwards. Then advisor, Prof. Xue, and other instructors gave them the professional and prospective suggestions on how to carry out the proposal and pointed out what should be the key point and novelty. (zhh)
- [Academic Exchanges] 2011-09-16 to 19, the 2011 National Conference on Plant Biology was held in Nanning, Guangxi province of China. This magnificent conference recruited many famous scientists and scientific researchers to communicate and discuss the recent results and progresses on plant biology, and was sponsored by the organizations of The Genetics Society of China, Chinese Society of Plant Physiology, Chinese Society for Cell Biology and Botanical Society of China. Prof. Hongwei Xue was invited to attend this conference, made the talk on functional mechanisms of phosphatidylinositol signaling pathway on polar auxin transport, and communicated our recent research progresses with other participants. - [Lab Tendency] 2011-08-29 to 30, 2011 Annual group meeting of Functional Mechanisms of Hormones and Seed Development Functional Genomics was held in Dongshan, Jiangsu Province. Our group leader Professor Hongwei Xue presided this conference. And it’s our great honor to meet professor Zhihong Xu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former president of Peking University and have his precious advice through this conference.
Stay with the program, firstly senior PhD students, Yong Tang, JingJing Zhang, Hongbo Gao, Jun Wang, Linlin Yin, Jinjin Xiang concluded their work in the past years. They shared the research background, progress, workplan as well as the experiences they learned from the past work with all of us. Each report was followed by hot discussion on how to make the work for the scientific issue significative and improve perfectly.
Then, the new members of our group, Yajin Ye and Lijuan Zhou talked their project design with us. In this session, Prof. Xue gave them plenty of valuable suggestions on the further research plan and let them know the importance on rigorous and delicated experimental design.
Next, we went into the discussion for current researches on PI signaling, microRNAs, seed quality and leaf development. Dr. Hongyan Yao, introduced the progress going on in PI subgroup, questioned the barriers in this research area and suggested some workplan . Libi Lin, representative of the microRNAs subgroup, summed up the trouble that members faced up as well as the thoughts about the future work. Hua Zhang made the conclusion for the current work on seed development and quality, and presented advices on this part of work. Lijuan Zhou talked about the proceding study in the leaf development , and focused on the exploration of functional mechanisms of hormones in this process.
Finally, Prof. Xu positively made sure of the work we are doing, definitely affirmed the academic direction we are working on, and encouraged us to make our work perfectly on scientific issues, which were so meaningful for us. Sincerely hope our lab grow better and better! ( llb, zh)
- [Academic Exchanges] 2011-07-16 to 21, the 17th “International Symposium on Ca2+Binding Proteins and Ca2+Function in Health and Disease ”was held in Beijing, China. The CaBP meeting covered three major themes, Ca2+ homeostasis, Ca2+ functions, and Ca2+ signaling and disease, and a strong emphasis was laid on molecular and structural biology and biochemical aspects of calcium signaling. Professor Hongwei Xue attended and was invited to chair the workshop on “Specialized Ca functions symposium ”,in which he made the speech about “IP3/ Ca2+in plant blue-light signaling and pollen germination” . - [Academic Exchanges] 2011-06-30 to 07-03, Professor Hongwei Xue as well as our group member, Dr. Hongyan Yao attended The 2nd International Conference on Plant Metabolism was held in Qindao, China. The theme of this conference is “Plant Metabolism and Modern Agriculture”. Many leading scientists in the plant metabolism world presented their latest research in the areas of plant metabolisms involving biosynthesis of terpenes, vitamins, phenols, pigments and cell walls, carbon and nitrogen metabolism, metabolomics and metabolic engineering. The conference brought researchers together to share the knowledge on plant metabolism, which also served as a forum to promote the development on plant metabolism. Prof. Xue was invited to make the speech on “Studies on the rice starch biosynthesis and quality control” and organized the plenary session on regulation of plant nutrition and metabolism. (llb)
- [Student Life] 2011-6-27, The Chorus Competition of the 90th anniversary of the communist party of China: “Sing the Praises of the Communist Party of China and Hands by Hands for Making Bold Innovations” was held in the lecture hall of our institute. The first party branch of the National Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics (NKLPMG) that our group belongs to sang the songs of “Unity is strength” and “Great Sea, My Sweet Home”. Dr. Hongwei Xue, Libi Lin, Jingjing Zhang, Yong Tang and Jun Wang took part in the song competition. Jun Wang also sang a solo “ Small poplar”. The competition went smoothly in the warm atmosphere, and audience and referees gave the hope that more activities like this which shows the spirituality of the institution, and passion and vitality of students could be held from now on. Plant Physiology is an international journal devoted to physiology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, biophysics, and environmental biology of plants. The journal has grown dramatically in recent years.

- [Lab Tendency] 2010-12-10, the subgroup meeting was held, and mainly talking about the Shanghai T-DNA Insertion Population (SHIP) and rice starch metabolism regulation. The rice SHIP provide a rich and solid platform for the rice functional genomics studies, during the meeting, how to use the SHIP effectively and new methods for searching the SHIP were discussed. For starch metabolism regulation, advice on improving the detecting methods and analyzing of transcriptional regulation network were giving. Finally, we talked about the existing problems of the laboratory and needed experimental system for convenient work are . Through this discussion, we learn more about the laboratory resources, and it’s good for our further research work. (zhh)

- [Academic Exchanges] 2010-10-08 to 10, Professor Hongwei Xue was invited to attend China-Japan Joint Workshop on Rice Morphogenesis, which was held in Beijing, China. This symposium focused on the scientific development of bilateral cooperation and was hosted by the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB), CAS, and chaired by Prof. Jiayang Li and Prof. Mound Junko. There were eighteen research scientists from both sides of Japan and China to give a series of interesting lectures on the current researches. - [Academic Exchanges] 2010-08-30, Prof. Yongbiao Xue came to SIPPE for academic exchanges, and was invited to give us a lecture titled with A Life or Death Decision: Control of S-RNase Based Self-Incompatibility(SI). The research area of his lab mainly focus on the molecular mechanisms of pollen recognition in flowering plants. They have found the first member of the SLF family, AhSLF-S2, in Antirrhinum, whick mediates the pollen function of S-RNase-based SI and its protein product forms part of an SCF (Skp1/Cullin or CDC53/F-box) complex to target S-RNases for destruction by the ubiquitin/26S proteosome-mediated proteolytic pathway during compatible pollination. Their discovery provoked great interest of audience on spot and hot discussion. (zhh)
- [Academic Exchanges] 2010-8-24, Dr. Jun Xu, the former member of our lab, working in The Rockefeller University of the United States, came back to be invited to give us a talk about his research work for mRNA storage and mRNA decapping in Arabidopsis stress response. His report caught students’ attention and many interesting questions were discussed. From the lecture, we know that mRNA storage and decapping also play an important role in stress response, and this kind of function may involve in other responses of environment conditions. (zhh)

- [Lab Tendency] 2010-04-17 to 18, 2010 Annual group meeting of Functional Mechanisms of Hormones and Seed Development Functional Genomics was held in Changshu, Jiangsu Province. This meeting aimed to encourage communication and promote thinking.
Firstly, senior PhD students, Fangfang Fu and Guozhang Wu, shared their research experiences from their project design, research method and research clues with all of us. Then, Jingjing Xiang and Jun Wang reported their research progress and further work plan. The new members of our group, Baojun Yang, Jingjing Xu and Shutang Tan talked their project design widely. In this part, Prof. Xue gave his valuable proposal on how to think about the scientific issues and work on the further research, which will commit to our further research.
Next, we made a wide discussion for our current research concerns on hormones, PI signaling, seed quality and microRNA. Xiaoyi Zhou, representative of the hormones subgroup, focused on the exploration of functional mechanisms of hormones to discuss. Yong Tang, summed up the troubles and ideas that the members of PI signaling met and thought about in the research. Biqing Wen made the conclusion for the current work on seed development and quality, and gave his advice on further research plan on this part of work. Liangjiao Xue presented a summing-up report about current work on microRNA and perspective on future work.
In the end, Prof. Xue made the summary for the academic achievements of the last year and drew a blueprint for the future’s work. Also he encouraged his student to fight for their academic dream. Sincerely hope our lab to get further achievements in the future.(llb, zh, wsy, djq)

Fangfang Fu and Qiuming Shi presented their reports titled as “Co-expression analysis identified RSR1, an AP2/EREBP family transcription factor, as a novel rice starch biosynthiesis regulator” and “Arabidopsis MSBP1 is activated by HY5 and HYH and is involved in photomorphogenesis”. - [Lab Tendency] 2009-05-11, 2009 Annual group meeting of Functional Mechanisms of Hormones and Seed Development Functional Genomics was held in the meeting room of our institute. Firstly Prof. Hong-Wei Xue made the summary for the academic achievements of the last year and drew a blueprint for the future’s work. - [Academic Exchanges] 2009-3-24, the 1st SIPPE-UCSD Workshop on Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Plants was jointly held successfully by SIPPE and UCSD. As the chairman of the workshop, Prof. Hongwei Xue and Yan Guo hosted the meeting. Distinguished Prof. Julian Schroeder and Prof. Yunde Zhao from UCSD, Jian-Kang Zhu from UC Riverside and other famous researchers in China on the plant development as well as adversity stress response were invited to give excellent lectures. - [Lab Tendency] 2008-8-8:On the last day of 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Zhihong Xu of our institute, also the president of Peking University and the final torch-bearer, carried the torch and lit the cauldron at the Olympic Youth Camp, which brought thunderous applause and cheers from the crowd. This relay is the last one before the torch lights the flame cauldron in the National Stadium to symbolling the onset of the 2008 Olympic Games. During the 130-day worldwide relay, the sacred flame has travelled 137,000 kilometers through 130 cities and finally arrived at Beijing. Professor Xu was very excited, and said "We have been preparing for the Beijing Olympic Games for seven years, and eventually it is about to open. - [Lab Tendency] 2008-7-14 to 18:The 1st life science summer camp of SIBS (Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences) was successfully held in Shanghai. Many college students coming from all over the country participated in the activity. During the five days, the campers attended various academic activities, listened to speeches, and communicated face-to-face with excellent advisors and students. Several campers of SIPPE visited our lab. Teachers Meiqing Xing and Li Song kindly gave them an attracting introduction on the research in our lab. Professor Hong-Wei Xue and other teachers advised us that we’d better clean up our experiment desk and tidy the instruments every week on Friday morning. So today we mobilize all the members to join in cleaning up. Redundancy reagent bottles are washed; shelves with dust are brushed; all kinds of instruments are cleaned. The student Jing-Jing Zhang, who is a cadre of student union primarily responsible for learning, takes charge of the academic salon. After the report Jing-Jing Zhang screens a film which she picks out from abundance new or classical dishes. - [Lab Tendency] 2007-11-27, Paper "An Inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase functions in phototropin 1 signaling through altering cytosolic Ca2+" by Xu Chen & Wen-Hui Lin et al. was accepted by The Plant Cell.At5PTase13, one of 5PTases family, is a key enzyme in phosphatidylinositol metabolic pathway. This work shows At5PTase13 acted independently from CRY1 and COP1, but functionally interacted with PHOT1 gene, and At5PTase13 may antagonize the function of PHOT1 through calcium signaling under blue light.

Tug of war competition had appeared in 1904 Summer Olympics. Our game needs boys and girls each team. They can strengthen cooperation in the team with each other. In the match of "shooting basketball", FangfangFu exerted her unique skill and won impassioned applause from the whole audience, and got the runner-up. In the match of "push-and-pull", all our members held together and successively got the victory. Unluckily, we lost the final game. During the report, Prof. Klaus Palme introduced their research progress about the plant hormone auxin and its action based on the Systems Biology, which delineated the pathways of auxin transport, perception and signal transduction and together define the roles of auxin in controlling growth and patterning. - [Lab Tendency] Six graduate students in our lab are preparing for the opening report. In SIPPE, Graduate students need to write opening report and make thesis plan in the start of the 2nd semester. Students are required to access a number of backgrounds and write a report of no less than 5000 words and the contents include backgrounds and working significance report. Opening report shall be under the instruction of at least three instructors. We give our best regards to these students and hope that they can obtain more productions in the future. (xxhan)
- [Student Life] On September 26th, the "Welcome the freshman" evening party was held in the hall of institute. The party was lively and brilliant, which attracted large crowds. There were programs such as the hip-hop dance, Chinese kung fu, cross- talk, and so on. Jingjing Zhang showed the dynamic and lively aerobics, which won a tempest of applause. The atmosphere over this party was bright and high, and the party had a great end.

- [Academic Exchanges] Accompanied by Prof. Le KANG, director-general of the CAS Bureau of Life Sciences and Biotechnology and Prof. Bo-wei tang, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee President of SIBS, Prof. Jiayang LI, CAS vice president in charge of biological research, paid a visit to SIPPE on 27th July. He held talks with the executives and principals of SIPPE on the S&T development, talent training, research platform construction S&T management, and graduate programs. - [Lab Tendency] Junior and senior students and some of graduate students from College of Life Science, East China Normal University visited our lab on 13th June. Prof. Hong-wei xue gave a warm welcome meeting to the students and introduced the subject setting, research achievements and research characteristic about our institute to them. - [Lab Tendency] Stefano Mancuso et al.'s paper " Phospholipase Dζ2 Drives Vesicular Secretion of Auxin for Its Polar Cell-Cell Transport in the Transition Zone of the Root Apex" has been accepted by Plant Signaling & Behavior. Congratulations!
- [Lab Tendency] The Nature journal is the one of the most famous scientific journals, which is the goal for scientists. However, there are few papers from chinese scientists in the journal. To this question, on June 12nd the SIBS invited editor in chief of the Nature journal to have a presentation and encourage chinese to submit their contribution . Professor hongwei Xue indicated that numerous chinese scientists were short of their research production for Nature. A lot of graduate students and professors were attracted to participate in the conference and inspired to be harder for their research work.(cdai,2007-6-19)
- [Student Life] Congratulations! In the SIBS volleyball match, the Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology got the runner-up and YuanWang, PengHu and YongTang in our lab joined as the members. The competitions were always really exciting from preliminary contest to the final. We think it is a good chance of champion for us. Unluckily, we lost the final game for the score of 1:2. - [Lab Tendency] Recently, our professor Hong-Wei Xue required all the students in our lab to ask at least one question in our seminar. Professor Hong-Wei Xue said that: if you listen to the report with the question, you could acquire more information and knowledge. Professor Hong-Wei Xue encouraged everybody to ask more question in seminar. From lately seminar we pleasantly found that this measure promoted our initiative spirit, pushed all of us take part in other students’ work and at last advanced our field of vision. (2007-6-19)
- [Student Life] On May 12th, Students of SIPPE went to Mogan mountain and Nanxun old town for the spring outing. Mogan mountain is a famous mountain in china history because it’s the naissance of the rumorous Ganjiang and Moxie swords. Nanxun is an old tradition town and has more than seven hundred years history. The students breathe the fresh air of the environs and relax themselves. - [Academic Exchanges] Prof. Vicki L. Chandler from the University of Arizona, USA visited SIPPE on 15th May. The research of Prof. Vicki L. Chandler was focus on the regulation of gene expression. In 2001 Dr. Chandler received the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Faculty Researchers of the Year Award and in 2002 she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. During the visiting in SIPPE, Prof. Vicki L. Chandler presented a lecture titled as “Tandem Repeats Mediate Heritable Chromatin Changes Through an RNA-Directed Mechanism” in that she introduced some research progress in the regulation of gene expression on chromatin level. After the lecture, Prof. Vicki L. Chandler visited our lab. Prof. Hong-wei Xue introduced some related work of us to Prof. Chandler, and then discussed closely. - [Academic Exchanges] Dr. Sonja Maki from Biology Department at Carleton College, Northfield, MN, USA visited our lab on 8th May. Dr. Sonja Maki come to SIPPE and gave a lecture title as “Regulation of meristem fate in Pisum Sativum L.” in the morning, then she visited our lab and had a closely communication with Prof. Hong-wei Xue about the research progress of both sides, and they both made some suggestions for work of each other . - [Academic Exchanges] Professor Wei-xiong Zhang from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Washington University was invited by Professor Hong-wei Xue to SIPPE and gave a lecture titled as “A novel integrated approach to identification of stress-inducible microRNA genes in Arabidopsis thaliana” on 13th Mar. After the report, Professor Wei-xiong Zhang visited our lab and had a closely communication with Professor Hong-wei Xue about the progress in microRNA research, and they both hope to have a collaboration with each other on some project in the future.
- [Student Life] Jan. 28-30th 2007, all the students in our lab went to The Sun Island which is a charming place to spend our vacation. We relaxed ourselves and did some amusements, such as riding horse, running karting and playing archery. The second day, we held a pingpong competition to promote friendship and strengthen habitus. Among the laugh, the game ended as a dogfall.
The most important item on the agenda was the year-end conclusion meeting. Professor Xue summed up the whole 2006 year, praising the achievement and prospecting the next year. He mainly introduced the work progress in the areas of Signal Transduction, Hormone Mechanisms and Seed Development Functional Genomic, especially put forward to set up the system of measurement the hormone content and in situ hybridization. Professor also gave his advise on personal work and problems we had to confront and solve in the future. Students discussed zealously to the questions and hoped to have more communion and cooperation.
At the end of this trip, we took a photo together,we all hope we can get more achievements in the new 2007.
