  • [Student Life] 2011-12-29, SIPPE graduate students joint Shanghai Soho International Youth Hostel to donate the unworn clothes, scarves, and gloves for keeping warm, and second-hand books to the western pupils of Lisu minority, Lijiang District, Yunnan, this time. The Shanghai Soho International Youth Hostel will be responsible for the clothes sterilized and delivery of all the donations to the school by post. All members of our laboratory responded and donated positively, with hope that the western impoverished children may feel warm in this winter. (zh)
  • [Lab Tendency] 2011-12-28, Life Technologies’ technical supports gave us introduction on the principle and application of bead-based solution for different beads, and protein expression system (in-vitro, prokaryote, yeast, insect, mammalian and virus) in our laboratory. With the detailed questions occurred during experiments, we discussed with technical supporter. (zh)
  • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-11-28, The 2011 annual meeting of the national key laboratory of plant molecular genetics (NKLPMG) and the 23rd academic commission was successfully held in the lecture hall of SIPPE. Dr. Hongwei Xue, director, made the work report at the meeting on behalf of the laboratory. He generally introduced the orientation and objectives, research directions of laboratory and field layout, talent team, and the overall progress of 2011, and summarized the research progresses that made in plant function genomics, plant hormone and signal transduction, plant development and cell biology, plant nutrition and metabolism, plant biotechnology and other areas. Meanwhile, Dr. Hongwei Xue expressed that the laboratory will seek for the gaps and shortcomings from the assessment, strive to improve the sustainability of the research outputs, and continue to strengthen the capacity in the critical areas of scientific research and great projects, achievements transformation, personnel training and other aspects of the work.

    The success of the academic commission is of great significance to the future work of the lab, which will bring together expert advices, maintain a good momentum of development, refine research direction, optimize talent team, make clear the development goal, boost work of laboratory in all aspects into a new period of development.   • [Lab Tendency] 2011-11-01, the Chinese spaceship Shenzhou-8 was launched on board a Long March rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Inner Mongolia.

    Althrough the lauching course, as the chief designer of Space Life Science and Biotechnology subsystem, Prof. Hong-Wei Xue went to the launch centre for the last preparation work at the forefront with the other scientists.

    As reported by deputy chief commander of the manned space project, Shenzhou-8 carried a bio sample from the collaboration of China and the Europe. As many as 17 experiments on life science, projected together by China and Germany, are scheduled to be operated on the Shenzhou-8. In addition, it is the first time for China's manned spaceship to be responsible for international cooperation in the field of space science. Shanghai Insititute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (SIPPE) has played an important role in the project designing, demonstration and engineering in the past 4 years. All the researchers has made great efforts in the preparation. (llb)

  • [Lab Tendency] 2011-10-28, PhD candidates in our lab, Yajin Ye and Lijuan Zhou, carried out their opening reports on "Dynamic DNA methylation regulates rice seed development" and "Rice plant type and development of leaf angle", respectively. Firstly, they summarized the current progress in the related area and provided their thoughts on how to push the related research forwards. Then advisor, Prof. Xue, and other instructors gave them the professional and prospective suggestions on how to carry out the proposal and pointed out what should be the key point and novelty. (zhh)
  • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-09-16 to 19, the 2011 National Conference on Plant Biology was held in Nanning, Guangxi province of China. This magnificent conference recruited many famous scientists and scientific researchers to communicate and discuss the recent results and progresses on plant biology, and was sponsored by the organizations of The Genetics Society of China, Chinese Society of Plant Physiology, Chinese Society for Cell Biology and Botanical Society of China. Prof. Hongwei Xue was invited to attend this conference, made the talk on functional mechanisms of phosphatidylinositol signaling pathway on polar auxin transport, and communicated our recent research progresses with other participants.   • [Lab Tendency] 2011-08-29 to 30, 2011 Annual group meeting of Functional Mechanisms of Hormones and Seed Development Functional Genomics was held in Dongshan, Jiangsu Province. Our group leader Professor Hongwei Xue presided this conference. And it’s our great honor to meet professor Zhihong Xu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former president of Peking University and have his precious advice through this conference.

    Stay with the program, firstly senior PhD students, Yong Tang, JingJing Zhang, Hongbo Gao, Jun Wang, Linlin Yin, Jinjin Xiang concluded their work in the past years. They shared the research background, progress, workplan as well as the experiences they learned from the past work with all of us. Each report was followed by hot discussion on how to make the work for the scientific issue significative and improve perfectly.

    Then, the new members of our group, Yajin Ye and Lijuan Zhou talked their project design with us. In this session, Prof. Xue gave them plenty of valuable suggestions on the further research plan and let them know the importance on rigorous and delicated experimental design.

    Next, we went into the discussion for current researches on PI signaling, microRNAs, seed quality and leaf development. Dr. Hongyan Yao, introduced the progress going on in PI subgroup, questioned the barriers in this research area and suggested some workplan . Libi Lin, representative of the microRNAs subgroup, summed up the trouble that members faced up as well as the thoughts about the future work. Hua Zhang made the conclusion for the current work on seed development and quality, and presented advices on this part of work. Lijuan Zhou talked about the proceding study in the leaf development , and focused on the exploration of functional mechanisms of hormones in this process.

    Finally, Prof. Xu positively made sure of the work we are doing, definitely affirmed the academic direction we are working on, and encouraged us to make our work perfectly on scientific issues, which were so meaningful for us. Sincerely hope our lab grow better and better! ( llb, zh)


  • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-07-16 to 21, the 17th “International Symposium on Ca2+Binding Proteins and Ca2+Function in Health and Disease ”was held in Beijing, China. The CaBP meeting covered three major themes, Ca2+ homeostasis, Ca2+ functions, and Ca2+ signaling and disease, and a strong emphasis was laid on molecular and structural biology and biochemical aspects of calcium signaling. Professor Hongwei Xue attended and was invited to chair the workshop on “Specialized Ca functions symposium ”,in which he made the speech about “IP3/ Ca2+in plant blue-light signaling and pollen germination” .   • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-06-30 to 07-03, Professor Hongwei Xue as well as our group member, Dr. Hongyan Yao attended The 2nd International Conference on Plant Metabolism was held in Qindao, China. The theme of this conference is “Plant Metabolism and Modern Agriculture”. Many leading scientists in the plant metabolism world presented their latest research in the areas of plant metabolisms involving biosynthesis of terpenes, vitamins, phenols, pigments and cell walls, carbon and nitrogen metabolism, metabolomics and metabolic engineering. The conference brought researchers together to share the knowledge on plant metabolism, which also served as a forum to promote the development on plant metabolism. Prof. Xue was invited to make the speech on “Studies on the rice starch biosynthesis and quality control” and organized the plenary session on regulation of plant nutrition and metabolism. (llb)
  • [Student Life] 2011-6-27, The Chorus Competition of the 90th anniversary of the communist party of China: “Sing the Praises of the Communist Party of China and Hands by Hands for Making Bold Innovations” was held in the lecture hall of our institute. The first party branch of the National Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics (NKLPMG) that our group belongs to sang the songs of “Unity is strength” and “Great Sea, My Sweet Home”. Dr. Hongwei Xue, Libi Lin, Jingjing Zhang, Yong Tang and Jun Wang took part in the song competition. Jun Wang also sang a solo “ Small poplar”. The competition went smoothly in the warm atmosphere, and audience and referees gave the hope that more activities like this which shows the spirituality of the institution, and passion and vitality of students could be held from now on.   • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-06-22 to 25, our PhD students, Linlin Yin and Hongbo Gao attended the 22nd International Conference on Arabidopsis Research being held at the Memorial Union on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, Wisconsin, United States of America. Yin and Gao introduced their work by posters titled “Studies On The Arabidopsis Fatty Acid Regulators By Coexpression Analysis” and “Arabidopsis ARCP Protein DDH1/CSI1 Is A Novel Microtubule-associated Protein Which Is Required For Microtubule Stability”, respectively.   • [Lab Tendency] 2011-06-21, our group member Wenjing Jia passed her PH.D. thesis defense successfully. Her defense title was “the regulation of 5Ptase to leaf senescensc in Arabidopsis”. After her presentation, the defense committee talked about senescence with her, and gave some good suggestions for the future work. (xujj)
  • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-05-31 to 06-04, professor Hongwei Xue and our group members, Baojun Yang, Libi Lin, attended the Cold Spring Harbor Asia conference on Plant Cell and Developmental Biology, which was held at the Suzhou Dushu Lake Conference Center in Suzhou, China. Prof. Xue hosted the conference in the session of “CELLULAR SIGNALING” and gave a very interesting talk titled “Regulation of phospholipids and phosphatidylinositol signaling on PIN proteins and polar auxin transport ”. Baojun Yang and Libi Lin felt much benefited from this conference, and then shared their gained knowledge as well as their own views on the progress of the plant cell biology with others of our group members. The theme of this meeting is “The next successful five years for SIPPE”. Dr. Guozhang Wu was awarded the Successful Participant award in poster session for his work titled “Arabidopsis β-ketoacyl-[acyl carrier protein] synthase I (KASI) Is Crucial for Fatty Acid Synthesis and Plays a Role in Chloroplast Division and Embryo Development”.   • [Lab Tendency] 2011-4-18, three graduate students (Shutang Tan, Jingjing Xu, Baojun Yang) successfully passed their mid-term examination and were formally updated as Ph.D. candidates. These three students systematically summarized their achievement on the study of mechanisms of casein kinase, regulation of starch metabolism and proteasome inhibitor in their past two to three years, and meanwhile presented ambitious prospects for future work. Their work and plan were also gained considerable beneficial suggestion via adequate discussion with attented experts and students on related research field. (xujj)

  • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-3-24,Zhihong Xu, professor of Life Science College of Peking University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, was invited to make an interesting and current talk on the topic about scientific moral construction and social responsibility of scientists at Shanghai Institute of biological sciences. Mr. Xu firstly introduced the current states of scientific research and domestic education, with emphasis on the importance of scientific moral and social responsibility of scientists. Then he gave some relevant examples and placed high hopes on creation of good academic environments for all scientists. His wonderful talk arise deep thoughts of scientists. (zhh)
  • [Lab Tendency] 2011-3-21, Professor Hong-Wei Xue was recently invited to join the Plant Physiology Editorial Board to serve as a monitoring editor.

    Plant Physiology is an international journal devoted to physiology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, biophysics, and environmental biology of plants. The journal has grown dramatically in recent years.

  • [Academic Exchanges] 2011-03-15 to 18, Professor Hongwei Xue and other researchers from CAS and CSIRO convened in Joint CAS-CSIRO Workshop for ‘Cereal Genomics for Food Security’, which was held in Canberra & Kosciuszko National Park, Australia. This workshop aims to make a comprehensive communication for joint projects, and seek the further research collaboration between CAS and CSIRO. In the session of Grain Component and Nutritional Quality, Professor Hongwei Xue was invited to make a speech on Studies On Regulation of The Starch Quality by Rice Mutant Population. (llb)
  • [Lab Tendency] 2011-3-10, the new members of lab Yajin Ye and Lijuan Zhou presented their research proposals, which are about casein kinase, epigenetic effect on endosperm development and crosstalk about auxin and brassinosteroid, respectively. Prof. Xue affirmd the potential scientific value of their proposals, and patiently pointed out the existing problems, mainly about the operability of the proposal. Meanwhile, other teachers and senior students gave lots of valuable advice. (zhh)

Wenjing Jia and Jingjing Zhang presented their reports titled as “Rice dual specificity phosphatase OsDPS4 regulates leaf starch metabolism and seed development” and “Funtion of Arabidopsis transcriptional factor NF-Y ”.
